Another reason to be horrified: This excellent paper by @YArchaeology identified the presence of microplastics in archaeological soil samples from York now and in hsitoric samples taken in the 1980s.
Microplastics found c.3m down in Roman layers. 😶

Inscribed #Roman stone sarcophagus, found during the railway construction of Scarborough Bridge, York, in 1877. The inscription reads "To Julia Fortunata of Sardinia, faithful wife to her husband Verecundius Diogenes." #YorkRomans#archaeology
Complete #Roman glass unguent bottle, probably for storing oils, perfumes, or ointments. Found in 1872, during the York Railway Excavations of a large Roman cemetery site. #YorkRomans#archaeology
Malin Holst, Pragya Vohra (@yorkmedieval) and Steve Ashby have collaborated with local artist Sarah Schiewe in building a #sculpture to draw attention to the Coppergate woman, a #Viking-Age 'trailblazer' for York...
Calling Medieval sherd nerds! Help me out - this is a frag of early med pottery from York. I don't recognise this lattice pattern on the rim. Hard, gritty, grey fabric that feels a bit Torksey-ish. What ware is it?

#Roman silver denarius coin, issued 109-108 BC. On one side is the head of the god Sol, the god of the sun, with a crown of solar rays. On the reverse is the goddess of the moon, Luna, driving a two-horse chariot through the night sky. #YorkRomans#numismatics
Over the next few days a team from the @UoYArchaeology with specialist support are building a replica Mesolithic House in @MuseumGardens ! Activities and talks throughout the month.
I do so enjoy walking through this entrance to @MuseumGardens. St Mary's Lodge has got such a character with it's architectural history. It's definitely seen things!

The way finding grief present in this homemade sign is truly shared by everyone involved in York tourism and the complicated little streets and names we have for everything here. @VisitYork
Kings Manor colleagues - I see you.
Excellent to see the wonderful Star Carr exhibition today @YorkshireMuseum, thanks so much for the tour @YMT_Adam. Some stunning objects and lovely supporting interpretation
Some lovely leaf mines in @MuseumGardens today. All common finds of tiny fly larvae munch through leaf tissues.
1) Agromyza anthracina on nettle.
2) Phytomyza chaerophylii on Cow parsley.
3) Phytomyza minuscula on Aquilegia.
Mystery mine on what I think is Ligularia sp. In York @AgromyzidaeRS I'll get the gardens manager to confirm plant, but if so seems to be not present on the website. A new host for someone?
