This is the drawing room of a fashionable family living in the city at the end of the 18th century. One of our favourite objects in this room is the dummy board in the corner! They were intended to deter burglars by making rooms look populated when they were in fact empty!😲

This is The New Terrace Walk, York, by Nathan Drake. As a Transman in 2020 it’s really interesting to see how people went about meeting others from the LGBT community almost 300 years ago. Finding somewhere to meet like-minded people must have been difficult and scary. (1/4)

Kings Manor at the time was an all-girls school and there's LGBTQ+ graffiti scratched into the glass windows. One says “with this ring, I scratched the glass, with this face I kissed a lass”. Did you also know that York was the first city in the UK to get a permanent plaque?(2/2)

Responding now to works in @YorkMuseumTrust collections! This work is View of Exhibition Square, York by Ed Kluz. Exhibition Square – the gateway to LGBTQ+ History. Did you know that Anne Lister spent her youth at King’s Manor Academy the building next to Exhibition Square? (1/3)

The plaque was for Anne Lister! You can visit it at Holy Trinity Church. This is perhaps our greatest achievement from both charities. We were the first city to have a rainbow permanent plaque for Anne. More people have become aware of Anne since the Gentlemen Jack series (3/3)

Owing to Covid-19 #YorkPride was cancelled. Pride this year is a special milestone in LGBTQ+ History as it marks the 50th anniversary of the 1st Pride in New York. As a history charity we would have been celebrating by attending York Pride and advertising the projects we do.
