Are cabs really a luxury in 2026?

Here’s my take using something I call the “Coffee to Cab Ratio.” 🧵

People move to the West for a better future.

But a huge chunk of income goes to:
• Taxes
• Housing
• Transport
• Supporting complex benefit systems

And what’s left often isn’t “luxury”. it’s survival with better branding.

This is what I call the “False Hope Economy.”

It sells growth.
It sells opportunity.
It sells lifestyle.

But the cost structure quietly ensures everyday convenience remains out of reach.

Yes, salaries are higher in the West.
Yes, service costs are higher.

Agreed.

But if income scales up, shouldn’t relative affordability stay somewhat consistent?

Why is the ratio 5x higher?

UK → Cab costs ~10x a coffee
India → Cab costs ~2x a coffee

Why is the gap so wide?

20 mile cab ride (about 50 mins total travel time):

London: ~£50
New Delhi: ~₹600 (~£5)

Now the interesting part…

It’s fascinating how the Western world labels certain everyday services as “luxury” & prices them accordingly.

10–15 years ago, cabs were a luxury. But platforms like Uber & Lyft were built to make them accessible to everyone.

So why do they still feel like a premium product?
