The goal of building thinking classrooms is not to find engaging tasks for Ss to think about. The goal... is to build engaged Ss that are willing to think about any task. #thinkingclassroom@pgliljedahl
Some thoughts from this book(p.28): traditional grading - stifles risk taking and trust between the T and S; supports "commodity of grades";hides information, invites biases, provides misleading information; demotivates and disempowers students. @JoeCFeldman
We need to avoid any messaging that manipulatives are only for those who struggle or "Only if you need them" This stigmitizes mathematical modelling which is critical at ALL levels of learning. Concrete modelling is a critical/integral part of strong mathematical thinking.
"Once we were implementing frequent and visible random groupings [optimal size = 3], we saw an immediate uptick in the amount of students' engagement and thinking...this allowed for different students to step forward and begin to think." #thinkingclassroom@pgliljedahl
"Good problem solving tasks require students to get stuck and then to think, to experiment, to try and to fail, and to apply their knowledge in novel ways in order to get unstuck" Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics @pgliljedahl

If I was going to stop doing something as a teacher, it would be to stop assigning a grade, level, percent, mark, etc., and make sure the majority of the feedback is given during the learning process. School should be about learning, not getting the highest grade. #BookCampPD
Much work was spent in the past on Building a Thinking Classroom. There are many helpful practices that help to build math conversations, encourage collaboration and develop the skills to justify thinking. YRDSB Ts can see it all at https://t.co/JHvZygSQ8S thx @pgliljedahl!
