St Mark’s Basilica Filly Wins G1 French 1000 Guineas
Diamond Necklace was the first Group I winner for St Mark’s Basilica when charging home to win the...
https://t.co/e3LwwBaFJI
Diamond Necklace has just won the French fillies’ classic, the G1 Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. She had already won the G1 Prix Marcel Boussac as a 2yo, so what we are seeing now is not just talent, but continuity of quality. And from this filly, we can now turn our eyes to her sire because that is really the main point of this piece.
For St Mark’s Basilica, I think we have moved beyond the simple phrase he has made a good start” This was one of those days that changes the picture in a stallion’s career. Before his progeny had even reached the racecourse, I had already expressed positive thoughts about him and said that I believed he could become a top-class sire. I was not saying that simply as a guess, or to come back later and say, I told you so. There were reasons behind that view. And now, through today’s victory, we can look at the matter from a much clearer window.
For a young stallion to get a G1 winner from his first crop is important. But for that same filly to win the Marcel Boussac at two and then come back at three to win a classic is something else entirely. Because this is not only about precocity. This is about progression, resilience and the ability to carry quality from one season into the next. In other words, as I mentioned above, this is quality with continuity. Diamond Necklace is not just a bright 2yo who shone for a moment. She has come into a new season, handled the pressure of a classic, and answered again. For a stallion, that is a much stronger reference point. There is also a nice story in the background. St Mark’s Basilica himself won the French 2000 Guineas at Longchamp, and now his daughter has gone to the same stage and won the Poule d’Essai des Pouliches. In a way, it makes you feel that the blood and the line are still running strongly. This victory also gives us a clearer idea of what St Mark’s Basilica may be passing on to his offspring: high-class ability around a mile, and development that continues into the 3yo season. That is a very valuable piece of information.
Some young stallions produce early, good-looking, sharp types that sell well and win early, but then fade when the classic tests arrive. Of course, I am not saying, “Here comes the new Galileo.” One of the most expensive mistakes in this business is to see one major success and immediately put a stallion in front of a hall of mirrors. St Mark’s Basilica still has to repeat himself with his second and third crops. Diamond Necklace is a major reference and a powerful advertisement, yes, but to become a truly great stallion, he will need to produce high-class horses from different mares, in different shapes and profiles, and preferably top-class colts as well.
Still, after today, I can say this more comfortably: St Mark’s Basilica is no longer just a promising young stallion. He is now a genuine classic sire prospect. And what matters is that this success came exactly where his profile suggested it might. It was not a sprint-heavy result. It was not just a flash of early maturity. He has produced a proper classic filly. For a breeder, that is far more valuable.
If I were choosing mares for him today, I would look at him with more confidence and a little more courage. And I am not saying that based on one filly alone. With mares from productive families, mares that carry a bit of speed but also have a solid background of quality, I would take St Mark’s Basilica very seriously. Because from now on, his name is going to be heard more and more often in the stallion market.
