Also, for those receiving similar comments about undergrad GPA, 1st gen status or any number of things on apps: please know that you deserve to be here. Please keep applying and trying. It is worth it for what we learn about the process; this is invaluable so do not give up.

Additionally, the GPA doesn't take into account those who work full or part time in undergrad & are financially independent. 🙋🏽‍♀️ It doesn't take into account institutionalized racism. It does not take into account wealth disparities or how great of a mentor you will be to URM.

Our undergrad GPA does not define our ambition, potential or intelligence. Yet GPA/GRE are all too often used as cut offs to prevent predominantly low income, first gen or URM students from gaining entry into elite spaces. This does not have to be the norm in STEM & academia.

My undergraduate GPA was 2.82.

My graduate GPA is 3.8 & I spearheaded 2 lab projects, applied to 8 grant/fellowship apps, am exploring patent options for a 3D printed brain matrix, created a mentorship website for URM, did outreach & presented at conferences in my 1st semester.

So, I graduate this semester. I would usually yell out “FINALLY” but the truth is I’m very sad. Yes, it took me longer than 4 years, but I did it. Throughout this journey there were MANY struggles I had to face, especially w/in myself, but I’m proud of me and my accomplishments.

Lastly, becoming a student researcher. I wanted to leave a mark in the Biology Dpt bc the Latinx # is low. I wanted to set an ex. that YOU CAN DO IT TOO. Being able to go to conferences& present my work has been an honor. Believe in yourself& your work. Don’t let anyone stop you.
