I recently told someone my favourite city is bangalore. even though I was born and raised in bombay. even though I’ve seen how beautiful paris is in the rain, even though I’ve scuba dived on lembongan island, and seen the beautiful snow in switzerland or kashmir or whatever other standard of architectural or cultural beauty exists in the world. it’s because bangalore is the most beautiful in the rain, it has idli and filter coffee in every corner, it has a soft cold breeze pretty much every month of the year, it has beautiful houses that have not fallen prey to standardisation and so have not become soulless. it has smart, ambitious people who are more than where they come from. bangalore has a taste for aesthetics, and it insists on beauty for some reason. it insists on its originality despite the rapid pace at which it is being commercialised. you can hate the commercialisation of a place but you can’t deny it. it will come. but how a city endures through it (imo not true for bombay unfortunately) is what makes it beautiful

why would you expect butter chicken to be excellent in bangalore when you can’t expect the idli to be excellent in delhi. my biggest problem with commercialisation globally is that every cafe is selling the same things, every street looks the same, all the buildings look alike. the test for a city is how much of itself it is able to retain as more people visit/settle in it
