If you finished with a 2:2 and you're worried that your chances of ever getting a scholarship are non-existent. Don't panic. Stay with me as I you through how to go about it.
I’m often asked if it’s possible to get a scholarship with a 2:2.
The answer is yes. You absolutely can. I personally know people who have, and I’ve been directly involved in the process of some who succeeded.
I understand that many scholarships list a 2:1 as the minimum requirement, that’s not necessarily the full picture. Scholarship decisions go beyond grades. Professional experience, leadership, and personal resilience all matter—and these can be powerfully communicated in your Statement of Purpose (SOP).
Many scholarships don’t strictly reject 2:2 holders, they just make it harder.
The key requirement especially if you are considering schools in UK/Canada/US) is that your degree must qualify you for admission into a master’s program. If a university accepts your 2:2, the scholarship can follow.
For example, Chevening Scholarship typically prefers a 2:1, but candidates with a 2:2 can still be considered if a UK University accepts the 2:2, and they demonstrate professional experience.
Mastercard Foundation Scholarship does not set a grade rule. So, if you gain admission into any of their partner universities for an eligible program, you may get funding. Mastercard Foundation Scholarship even covers visa fees, flight tickets, and monthly stipends. They have 2 partner universities in Canada, about 6 in the US, a few in UK, South Africa, Asia and the rest of Europe.
Australia Awards & Erasmus Mundus
are very competitive, and they often prioritize strong academics + development impact. Winning these awards with a 2:2 is possible but less common unless you have strong work experience and your field aligns with priority sectors.
If your grades aren’t your strongest asset, then your profile must be.
Focus on building:
Solid professional experience (2–5 years can significantly compensate for a lower degree class).
Relevant certifications (e.g., PMP, ACCA, or industry-specific credentials).
High-impact community service, especially in leadership roles.
These are strong signals of growth and capability.
As someone who graduated with a 2:2, You also need to be strategic with your university and country choices. Some institutions are more flexible with 2:2 applicants, such as University of Regina, Memorial University of Newfoundland, and Crandall University.
Countries like Germany and Hungary (through programs like Stipendium Hungaricum) may also prioritize technical skills and program fit over just grades.
In places like the US and Canada, connecting with a professor whose research aligns with your experience can also work in your favor. A supportive professor can sometimes advocate for your admission—and even funding.
When given the opportunity to explain your grades (especially in your SOP), use it wisely. Briefly explain any mitigating circumstances that may have impacted your academic performance and caused your CGPA to tumble towards 2:2 like health issues, working while studying etc, but never dwell on them. Shift the focus quickly to your growth, achievements, and readiness.
If all else fails, consider a Postgraduate Diploma (PGD). Strong performance in a PGD can effectively reset your academic profile.
I hope this helps.

I’d just left Nigeria 🇳🇬 for the first time and landed at Manchester Airport UK 🇬🇧 m. I bought Coke, my wife bought Fanta, and the kids got Sprite.
One sip…
“Wait o… is this the same Coke I was drinking a few hours ago?” 😭
Even my wife said the Fanta tasted different.
Now, with how alarming the kidney problems I keep hearing about in Nigeria are, you can’t help but wonder what exactly Nigeria’s are consuming.
Coke Nigeria, Coke UK… are these really the same thing? 👀
Na only God know wetin dem dey give us eat and drink for Nigeria. 😭
If you're successful in life don't look down on others and think they're not doing enough for themselves.
True success means staying humble and remembering that everyone walks a different path at their own pace.
Almost all technicians in Canada 🇨🇦 don’t repair gadgets . They just diagnose them and tell you to buy another one. 😂
Bought this HP Core i7 in the UK 🇬🇧 from Currys for almost £1,000.
It packed up after about a year in Canada.
Technician charged me a whopping $130 for diagnosis.
The verdict: “This laptop is gone. Buy a new one.” 😭
I sent it to Nigeria 🇳🇬.
Technician fixed it for ₦30k.
One year later, the same laptop is still working perfectly. 😂
Every now and then, I still ask myself:
Why don’t they like repairing things here? 😭
Have you ever had a gadget repaired?

I met a young man here. His family moved from Nigeria to Canada in 2018. His father was 51 years old after nine long years of trying to immigrate. The opportunity finally came; he uprooted his entire family for a chance at something better.
The young man was 18 at the time. He told his father he would take youth skills training, work, and collect every short certification he could: health and safety, food handling, anything useful, while doing diplomas too. But beneath all that was a bigger dream: a future in the military or a paramilitary service.
Fast‑forward to 2026. He’s now close to joining the police, and he still hasn’t let go of his military dream.
Then this year, he travelled back to Nigeria for the first time since leaving in 2018, this time with a blue passport.
And then he saw his old friends. Some had gone to university. Some hadn’t. But many were still struggling to find direction, stability, and opportunity, not because they were lazy or lacked intelligence, but because they were trapped in a system where progress itself can feel like a battle.
He had been sending money to help them over the years. But being physically present made everything different. He could see the struggle. And it left him deeply sad.
He returned to Canada carrying something he didn’t take with him when he left Nigeria in 2018: A deeper appreciation for his father.
For years, his father’s decision to leave Nigeria at 51 looked like a simple immigration choice. Now he sees it clearly: His father didn’t just move the family to another country. He gave them new possibilities.
Migration isn’t always about running away from where you come from. Sometimes, it’s about giving the next generation a chance to become something that would have been much harder to become back home.
