After our space topic in science last half term, as luck would have it, there was a #PartialEclipse today. We tried to view it but unfortunately, the clouds had other ideas. We still learnt how to view an eclipse safely and we’ll be ready for the next one in 2022! #Eclipse2021
In Hawthorn class, we have been practising our observational drawing of fruit to represent different cultures as part of our arts fortnight. We are so proud of how resilient we were with our drawing and we recognised the importance of challenge to see improvement!
Today we used clay to create iconic buildings from the London skyline. Children showed real resilience working with this new and challenging material and every single sculpture was outstanding. Well done, year 5! We can’t wait to see the final published display.
We braved the wind today and recreated the Solar System as part of our outdoor learning. We mapped out the orbits of the planets in the Solar System and demonstrated how they move around the sun. #outdoorlearning#science@WestThorntonSch
In order to offer advice to a character, we used conscience alley. Children took a stance on a question and offered a suggestion and a reason. It was wonderful to hear such carefully considered answers! #drama#consciencealley
Year 5 experimented with clay in preparation for their final outcome. They used tools and hands to manipulate the clay into different forms, textures and shapes learning how to bond two pieces together securely by scoring and moistening.
We used speaking roles to support group discussions when making inferences about the message in the film The Pursuit of Happyness. Everyone had a role: instigator, prober or challenger to allow us all to contribute, challenge and dig a little deeper into the discussion. #oracy
To kick off the summer term, we really enjoyed working as teams to build towers. We were each assigned a social class at random and given different amounts of resources to complete the same task. We made some interesting reflections on Social Justice and Equity.
Year 5 explored perimeters of polygons using Numicon this week. They all showed fantastic communication skills when sharing the equipment and asked each other excellent questions to deepen their learning.
Hawthorn class took advantage of the sunny weather today to practise their running! The first week of #Couchto5K training was successful, we soon learnt to pace ourselves! Well done, everyone! Some fantastic collaboration and drive to keep going. 🏃♀️🏃
We have been experimenting with Kintsugi- the Japanese art of repairing broken ceramic to enhance flaws and imperfections. The children showed real resilience when working with difficult materials! #upcycling
Year 5 have been using rally coach to work through maths questions, listening, praising and giving advice to help their partner convert between cm and m.
Today in English, we answered questions in a role of a character based on our core book ‘The Bone Sparrow’. We had a great lesson and the children demonstrated collaboration and excellent acting skills.
In year 5, we have been looking at the features and the language used in letters. Today, we got to experience writing a letter to the other children in year 5 at the other site. We can’t wait to receive a response!
Year 5 children have also published a book which includes the outstanding learning from last half term. We are so excited to be able to celebrate each other’s work! @WestThorntonSch
A fantastic achievement for year 5 children to see their published work inspired by ‘The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and the Horse’. They should be extremely proud of their learning! @charliemackesy@WestThorntonSch
In History this half term we are learning about the Anglo-Saxons. Today, we looked at a range of images in our groups and came up with some fantastic wonders. We will be exploring and researching these wonders over the next few weeks in our History lessons. @WestThorntonSch
This week in year 5 we had a science morning exploring how sound is made. We looked at how sound travels to our ears and how the brain decodes those signals. We then investigated how sound can travel through different medium using a string telephone.
Welcome to Year 5’s Twitter page. We have created a values tree to display West Thornton’s core values and particularly looking at our value kindness this half term. The children reflected on our values and what it means to them and added it to our tree.
