the reason this doesnโt exist yet is because the publisher must give up the gameโs source code by writing every core piece of game logic to an immutable, public blockchain. MMORPGs cost an incredible amount of money to produce, so for obvious reasons, this is a sacrifice no one is willing to make.
so we end up with toys which are virtual worlds only in name, where the publisher is in service more of itself than its community. count the number of MMOs which have had the plug pulled over the past two decades. how many player hours wasted, economic value destroyed, and friendships lost?
what if we put the players first? what does a virtual world that could never be turned off, even if we wanted it to be, look like?
what would the downstream social and economic effects of this be? ingame goods would inherently become more valuable, social bonds and groups such as guilds would become more important, each action taken would become history rather than ephemera.
permanence creates meaning. the social contract between players changes fundamentally when everyone knows this world will outlive them.
we believe fully onchain games are the future - but getting there will be an incredible challenge both technically and philosophically. we hope youโll follow along for the ride.
