This is a hypothetical to spark discussion on incentives in healthcare.

Let’s say you were sick and went to your doctor for an antibiotic. The pharmacy fills it for you, but you decide not to take it because you’re going to manage your illness with alternative therapies or OTC meds. Your pharmacy tells you all the reasons why you need to take it—such as it’s for your health and well-being, and the health and well-being of others you may come in contact with. They also tell you that if you don’t take your antibiotic, you’ll be discharged as a patient from their pharmacy.

What would you say to the pharmacy?

What if you could be discharged from your pharmacy and doctor for not taking *any* medication prescribed?

Now, what the pharmacy didn’t tell you is that in addition to being reimbursed for dispensing the antibiotic, insurance companies also pay the pharmacy a bonus for every patient who picks up their antibiotics—and a massive bonus at the end of the year for having a high percentage of patients who do so.

Would you feel the pharmacy genuinely cared about the health and well-being of you and others, or would you feel their prescription pick-up requirement was based on the bonus from insurance?

Funny you mentioned that bc my son is also autistic. We had B/G twins. My son was developing socially sooner than my daughter and shortly after their 12 or 15 month vaccines, he started becoming delayed. They’re 6 now. He’s not conversational but he has echolalia mostly. He’s grown a lot since starting ABA in February. We remain hopeful.

Leucovorin is a generic drug meaning multiple manufacturers can make it which will drive the pricing down. It’s been available for a long time and as far as investing in a generic drug manufacturer goes, that wouldn’t be very wise because there isn’t any money to make. Investing in brand name drug manufacturers is where the money is at. They are the ones who fund the research and go through the initial FDA drug approval process.
