In USSR you could learn native languages of each republic- whether Georgia or Ukraine. It wasn't an official language however. And if people preferred their native language, they were looked down upon.

@e_l_g_c_a @clashreport @LauraLoomer And something else that is important for you to know for your Ukrainian history- the western Ukraine had more Ukrainian autonomy than Central and Eastern. The closer they were to the western border, the less control Soviet union had over that region.

Ukrainian was a second language. Ukrainian language, culture, traditions were all suppressed. Russian became the first language. There was a Russification across all 15 republics of USSR. People could speak Ukrainian inside their families, but not in classrooms, courts, etc. There was a Ukrainian language class in school.

He is talking about each republic's native language became a second language, while Russian became forced upon people to be their first.

@jht76225 @clashreport @LauraLoomer Hungary was not a USSR republic. Hungarian minority still had to study in Russian, watch Russian TV and have Russian as their main language no matter where in USSR they lived - Russia, Ukraine, etc. What he is talking about is a different topic entirely.
