Ethiopia to UN: Key Statements on the Nile and Regional Relations

1. We contribute 85% of the Nile’s water, while Egypt contributes 0%.
2. Egypt still views the Nile in a monopolistic manner based on colonial-era agreements.
3. Ethiopia will continue exercising its right to development using the Blue Nile waters, in accordance with the principle of ‘equitable and reasonable use’.
4. We hope that Egypt will reconsider its colonial stance on the Nile and view the issue from a perspective of cooperation and equality.
5. Egypt’s old approach of keeping upstream countries preoccupied with conflicts and unrest to ensure the flow of the Nile’s waters is no longer viable.
6. Ethiopia calls on Egypt to immediately stop destabilizing Africa.
7. We invite Egypt to negotiate based on international law.
8. The Entebbe Agreement will come into effect as of October 13, 2024.
9. Egypt has a golden opportunity to restore peaceful relations with the countries of the Nile Basin Commission by signing the Entebbe Agreement.
