Godi Media vs Ex Godi Media

Before 2014, some news channels had access to the Government of the day, while others didn't. "Eminent" journalists travelled abroad with ministers in chartered flights, got big interviews easily, had access to Rashtrapati Bhavan for anniversary celebrations.

Did you ever see Rajat Sharma, Arnab Goswami or Navika Kumar use terms like "Godi Media" day in and day out? Did you see them demean their peers with derogatory labels? Calling them sellouts? They did what professional people in jobs do - get on with their work. Hope that their time will come one day.

And the tables did eventually turn. But look at how unhinged some journalists have become without all that access and power. When they were in the 'godi' of the state, it was all fun and games. But now that they've lost access, TV news is 'destroying' the country and anchors are like 'murderers'.

A class of Indian journalists collaborated with the Chinese to further CCP propaganda in India, in the middle of a pandemic that originated in China, and at a time when Indian soldiers died at the borders in a conflict with the Chinese military. People accusing others of being 'Godi' media were themselves sitting in the 'Godi' of Xi Jinping.

Ravish Kumar was part of a film funded by Qatar. He went on Qatari state-media to rant about India. Qatar - a country that neither has democracy, nor a free press, funds the Muslim Brotherhood and actively uses state media for anti-India narratives. If there's one network on the planet that has no connection with the words "free" and "fair" journalism, it is Al Jazeera.

Media also has its cyclical shifts, and it seems the old guard cannot tolerate their irrelevance as a new media elite emerges in the country. Mind you, it happened with the political class too. And so the gloves are off, and each group has labels and names for the other group, but in essence, it's a battle between Godi Media and ex Godi media.
