I don't know how to say this gently, but if you think that it's even POSSIBLE for the climate to *improve* in your lifetime… uhh…
Okay, let's say humans and factories and power plants suddenly blinked out of existence today
First, temperatures would immediately increase…
1/
Sitting in the shade with all the water you can drink, a healthy adult can still overheat and die within hours. That is what heat plus humidity does to the body, and a double heat dome is now spreading that exact combination over more than 200 million Americans.
A heat dome is a huge zone of high-pressure air that parks over a region and refuses to move. The high pressure pushes air downward, and as that air sinks it gets squeezed and heats up, the same way a bike pump warms up when you push air into it. Skies stay cloudless and the ground can run about 30°F hotter than normal for days. Forecasters sometimes call it a death ridge.
The temperature itself is only half the danger. Your body's main way of cooling down is sweat, which carries heat away as it dries off your skin. Humid air is already packed with water. The sweat has nowhere to go, your inner body temperature climbs past 104°F, and your organs start to shut down. Scientists track this with the wet-bulb temperature, a single number that combines heat and humidity. It is measured with a wet cloth over a thermometer, showing how much cooling the air can still give. For years the assumed survival limit was a wet-bulb of 95°F. In 2022 a Penn State team sat young, healthy volunteers in a heat chamber and found the body gives out sooner, closer to 87°F. For older people, who make up most heat deaths, it is lower again.
The nights are when heat waves turn deadly. Across the Midwest and East, overnight lows this week are expected to stay in the 70s and near 80 in some cities. The body never gets a cool window to recover, heat keeps building inside homes without air conditioning, and the strain piles up night after night.
This is why heat is the deadliest weather in the United States. Over the past 30 years it has killed about 183 Americans a year on average, ahead of floods, tornadoes, and hurricanes, by NOAA's count. The real number is almost certainly higher. Heat deaths often get written down as heart attacks or kidney failure. When a heat dome settled over the Pacific Northwest in 2021, somewhere between 600 and well over 1,000 people died.
Europe is going through its own heat dome this same week, with France climbing past 44°C (111°F) and Britain breaking its hottest-June record. Climate change does not cause any single dome, but it loads the dice, making them hotter, longer, and more likely to arrive early in the year.
Most heat deaths happen quietly, indoors, to elderly people living alone in apartments with no air conditioning, where the temperature never drops at night and nobody stops by to check.
Them: Disabled people need to work! Get off your lazy asses, stop blagging the system and expecting things for free
Also them: disabled people should neither be seen nor heard therefore should not work where the public can see them
I’m actually a child online safety expert and was one of the pioneers in this space with Club Penguin and so I feel uniquely positioned to critique this.
The groomer problem is real but it’s also vastly overstated. The far larger issue we saw at Penguin was suicidality or reports of sexual abuse in the home.
There is no solution for lazy/bad parenting. You can implement all the ID laws you want but if parents are going to just hand kids their phones unlocked, those kids will have access to all the same things the parents have unfettered.
What I found is that these draconian safety laws actually make it harder to be an honest operator of kids apps because on one hand it’s so much legal risk and so much user friction that it simply becomes uninvestible as a business.
Parents will just lie to let their kids use the unfettered internet. For example, I have a friend who works in mobile gaming who has two kids, one above and one below the age limit but separated by just 2 yrs, and the two wanted to play and chat together on Roblox - which is reasonable. To do this, he just verified that his younger kid is old enough for the chat feature when he’s not.
This happens all the time and will happen with these laws to. How far do we want to go with this? Scan the face of the user in real-time to make sure it’s not a kid using the device? We could do that but it feels like a massive unwanted intrusion of privacy.
That’s how you know this law isn’t about kids. COPPA and GDPR-K and so forth already make it illegal to allow chat and other grooming vectors to kids.
What’s really being done here is trying to eliminate online anonymity. And this is a far bigger issue that goes to core speech rights because if you cannot criticize the govt anonymously and if wrong speech is a crime then it becomes easy to identify all the detractors of the govt in power, and ban, fine or jail them for speech crimes.
Starmer has already been doing this and he wants to do it at a much bigger scale. Starmer won’t even acknowledge the problem of actual grooming gangs in Britain’s neighborhoods but he’s worried about online grooming?
No he’s not, and this hypocrisy gives away the game. What he wants is to kill online anonymity so he can enforce censorship of his unpopular policies. No politician should have this power.
When I was young I really thought things were bad because solutions were complicated
Now that I'm old and realize things are bad because solutions are simple but will inconvenience affluent people (or those who aspire to be) and the religious fanatics.
“Why are you so mean to AI writers 😢”
1. You aren’t a writer, you’re a lazy slop generator
2. You take up real space in creative industries with stolen content
3. There is no talent, effort, or skill behind mass producing prompts for cash
4. You lack experience, effort, dedication, or craft
5. You demand the label of writer with the same audacity of ordering a pizza and calling yourself a chef
CEOs are quietly realizing the AI replacement plan has a problem.
Two problems, actually.
One: the token costs for running AI agents are now exceeding what they were paying the employees they fired.
Two: when the tokens run out, the AI stops. Just stops. No continuity. No workaround. Just a spinning wheel where your workforce used to be.
You fired humans to save money and bought a subscription that bills you into a corner.
The employees you let go knew what to do when things broke.
The AI just invoices you for the outage.
And then there’s the permission problem nobody wants to talk about.
To do its job, the AI agent needs access. Full access. Your systems, your patents, your contracts, your future plans. Everything you spent years building, handed over to a process that has no loyalty, no discretion, and no skin in the game.
You didn’t hire a replacement.
You gave a stranger with no soul the keys to everything you own.
Enjoy.
women dislike your ‘feminism’ bc it is a useless, bleak and disempowering worldview. if you genuinely believe all men are incapable of love, intimacy, care etc then what vision are you offering women? for them to be as miserable & isolated as you? not v compelling
I heard an interview today about AI in creative spaces and the man being interviewed said “AI is data, and Data can only look backwards. Creativity looks forwards.” And I need to sit with that in the best possible way.
Bezos ended shopping malls. Big box stores. Family owned boutiques, book stores, and businesses of all kinds. He strip-mined the US economy and left you in poverty, a slave to your internet connection. All you've got now is that fucking cell phone. You'll never own a house or buy another new car because of this jackass and his broligarch friends.
What I hate about ADHD:
- Forgetting birthdays
- Not calling my mom for 6 weeks
- 47 ideas/day, finishing none
- 11pm shame spiral
- Reading the same paragraph 5 times
- Tired by 4pm having done nothing
- Being told "just try harder"
We don't have it easy.
I'm going to say the quiet part out loud. What is this really about?
MAGA Republicans are counting seats because they’re chasing something much bigger.
A two-thirds majority in Congress.
Why, because, that gives them one step closer in power to change the Constitution.
Then, it's 3/4 of the states (38 of 50) to ratify any proposed amendments.
I wonder what the plan is to do that?!?
This isn’t normal politics anymore. This is a naked power grab in real time.
Clock it.
Literally, what are you guys talking about? 48% of Americans have no money left after paying for their bills and food. 76% of Americans are living pay check to pay check with little to no discretionary income. This isn't because Americans are stupid and don't know how to use their money. It's because the cost of living is rising faster than the rate of pay. People are getting buried more and more every year. ONE medical emergency, you're in trouble. If your car shits out (because most Americans need cars) you're in trouble. At 19 I almost had to file bankruptcy because of medical debt. Bankruptcy at 19 because I was sick. That would have made my early adulthood tremendously difficult to navigate.
There are many ways in which Americans are privileged. That doesn't discount how much many of them are struggling. We have literal food deserts here. There are entire communities of people living off the grocery store equivalent of a gas station.
Today I learned a term called
"Parentification Debt": When a child is forced to emotionally parent their own parent, they develop advanced skills in reading others but fall behind in understanding themselves. The debt comes due in adulthood when they realize they can manage everyone's feelings except their own.
i hate the idea that americans won’t revolt bc we’re ”lazy” and not because our government has spent the better part of 100 years and trillions of dollars /perfecting/ the art of global counterrevolution and repression. this is literally the final boss lmao
It's disgusting and intentionally demoralizing. The hero's journey, and Toph is a HERO, is one of difficulties and hardship but results in triumph. Only people with deep personal insecurities and inferiority complexes feel the need to tell children that their heros turned into washed up "complicated" losers like they imagine themselves to be. Grey is not interesting by virtue of it being grey. Toph and Sokka deserved happy endings befitting of the morals the original story espoused.
"but that's not realistic" no shit. That's the fucking point. It's aspirational. Something to STRIVE for and attain. "Actually even if you are a hero you can end up sad broken and alone" is a stupid fucking moral to put in media for children and a stupid fucking self masturbatory "look how complicated I think I am" idea for 99% of the time it's done. Grow up, let endings be happy.
