Two youngsters climbed a tree and deliberately harassed two female elephants. Had these been a solitary tusker or a musth bull, today’s headlines would likely have read: “Two killed in wild elephant attack.”

Too many people treat wildlife as entertainment and then blame the animals when things go wrong. In many such incidents, it is human stupidity and provocation not the elephants that trigger the conflict.

The land we occupy today was once the natural habitat of wildlife. We have encroached upon their homes, blocked their traditional routes, and then portray them as the villains when they react.
