"For the children, for the future, for the economy, for democracy."
When all is said and done, there will be nothing to pass down, and no one to pass it down to.
Your tones glare through the cracks in my lenses; staining everything. I'm 25 now. I thought I'd be rid of you by now. Or is this it? Are you to be a part of me forever? Fully developed.
I wrote poetry in the margins of my notebooks. Now, as I reteach myself long division I'm reminded I was always this spaced out. Notably better at long division though.
For the new album releasing, and the one after that. For a Christmas when you can afford presents for your friends. For that matching tattoo with your brother. For your senior student. For the cat you will one day adopt. For the mattress that's still learning the shape of you.
I know what I want, but not what I need. I am too much of a coward to ask for either anyway. My friends hold my hand. I hold my tears. And at night I hold all but myself together. I was a galaxy once, of my own design. How can I rebuild? I feel less alone by myself.
I hate this house. The cartilage of something that could have been. The knickknacks that never went up. The accent wall that never got painted. I hate how you stand there and speak of a dream only you still believe in. The nervous system of something that should have been.
I lay on a pile of blankets in a room that was never quite mine; the new mattress is delayed. It's okay, I say, I'm comfortable in Displacement.
I wait for sleep and think of texting you. But I won't. I label the process of letting go "Replacement". That is uncomfortable.
You
And your coffee stains on the countertops. Cabinets left open. Socks in your shoes by the door.
You
And your monologues. Mysophobia. Leaky water bottles. Red speckled beard.
You
And your ironed bed sheets. Occasional vegetarianism. Melatonin sleep.
I'm still not sure why it was you I told. I like to think I was simply that drunk, but really I think I was simply that lonely in my love. Yet, when you look at me, I feel a little less insane, perhaps even seen.
I'm glad it was you.
Imagine every star in the Universe. Imagine holding your beloved. Imagine understanding what is truly important in life. Imagine this moment, eternally. Imagine knowing the Universe loves you.
Do you see them now? This is what her eyes look like.
