For decades, water polo and high diving have been the two sports that kept Japan’s swim‑brief culture alive.
But since the 2000s, a surprising third stage has appeared: the Water Boys Show, a men’s synchronized‑swimming performance born from school festivals.

Interestingly, the performers have no technical reason to wear swim briefs. But when they tried switching to spandex shorts, the show instantly lost its sharpness—its ability to “look like a show.”

Why does the presence or absence of swim briefs change the entire atmosphere? I’m curious how you see it.
