I feel like this shouldn’t even need to be said, yet here we are.

Nobody is arguing that Lindsay Clancy was mentally healthy. A mentally healthy person does not strangle her three children. What I refuse to do is take the words “postpartum psychosis” and use them as an excuse that wipes away every decision she made leading up to their deaths.

She was a nurse. She understood the medical system. She had doctors. She had treatment. She had opportunities to tell the people treating her exactly what was happening in her head, and I have serious questions about whether she manipulated those evaluations instead.

Mental illness does not automatically mean someone has no agency, no understanding of right and wrong, and no responsibility for their actions. That is precisely what has to be proven here, not simply assumed because a diagnosis has been attached to what she did.

Cora was 5. Dawson was 3. Callan was 8 months old. They didn’t get another chance. They don’t get a diagnosis to explain away what happened to them. And I am not going to turn the woman who wrapped exercise bands around their necks into the victim of their story.

My sympathy is with the children. Full stop.

I am not denying that the medical system failed Lindsay Clancy. That however does not excuse her to kill her kids. And to the people saying that I do not know what PPD feels like and no uterus no opinion, what about the women who agree with my take?
