Oxygen has been discovered literally at the edge of time.

A groundbreaking discovery is compelling astronomers to revise our understanding of the universe's earliest epochs. Observations with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) have revealed oxygen in the galaxy JADES-GS-z14-0, which existed a mere 300 million years after the Big Bang—making this the most distant detection of the element to date.

This is kind of a problem. In the universe's youth, only lightweight elements like hydrogen and helium (plus traces of lithium) were present. Heavier elements such as oxygen are forged in the cores of stars and scattered into space via supernova explosions.

Detecting substantial oxygen so early implies that several generations of massive stars formed, lived briefly, and died explosively in an astonishingly short timeframe, challenging established models of gradual cosmic chemical enrichment.

Compounding the surprise, JADES-GS-z14-0 harbors far more heavy elements than predicted—along with exceptional brightness and mass—for a galaxy from this era. This suggests rapid, vigorous evolution that current simulations struggle to account for.

The findings paint a picture of a far more active and chemically advanced early universe than previously envisioned. If oxygen-rich galaxies like this were widespread, it could force a fundamental rethink of galaxy formation processes in the first few hundred million years post-Big Bang.

Astronomers are now eagerly hunting for additional examples of these primordial, metal-enriched systems lurking in the cosmic dawn.
