This legislation will empower young people all across Rhode Island. We are thrilled that it is now law. Our sincere thanks to @JBoylan4RI for your leadership. The YoungDems were proud to have testified and advocated in support of this bill.
This new law will encourage young people to be engaged in our democracy by allowing a 17-year-old to vote in a primary if they will be 18 by the general election.
Great work by House sponsor @JBoylan4RI.
"Many young people in our communities are engaged and paying attention,” said Representative Boylan. “If they’ll be voting in the general election, they should have a say in who appears on the ballot. Participation among our youngest voters has historically been low, and this bill could help encourage them to get engaged and stay engaged in our democracy.”

Just interviewed @YoungDemsRI President Sam Ackerman for my senior honors project focused on Gen Z's increasing political involvement. Thanks for giving me your time for this interview, Sam! It was nice to meet you.
Thank you @BillBartholomew@AntCherry92 @TheRebel94 for the critical discussion about enfranchising 16 & 17 y/os in school committee elections! Passing the enabling bills by @MiaForRep and @AlanaDimario (H5959 / S638) would be a victory for participatory democracy!
We are excited to be back and are hitting the ground running in the fight to empower Young Democrats throughout the Ocean State! Stay informed about our latest actions by joining our General Membership below!

Big news from the Rhode Island State House! YDRI has helped put forward a game-changing bill that would enable cities and towns to allow 16-year-olds to vote in school committee elections. Today the bill being heard in the House State Gov & Elections Committee.
The expulsion of two Black young Democrats from the @TNHouseReps for exercising their First Amendment rights is an egregious assault on our nation’s democratic values. YDRI stands with @Justinjpearson and @brotherjones_
69-26: Tennessee State Rep. @Justinjpearson (D), the last of the "Tennessee Three" to face a vote, is expelled from the state House after protesting on the floor last Thursday.
State Rep. @brotherjones_ was expelled earlier, but @VoteGloriaJ was not.
