@ReadReadj@sameerjauhar Hard to express this in so few words @ReadReadj, but I hope you take some satisfaction in knowing that you make a great deal of difference in the effort to hold psychiatry to account for the neglect of iatrogenesis. I'm grateful to you. Last word belongs to Ivan Illich.
Correct Tom, and that was the whole point of our 2019 review… that there is no reliable (placebo controlled) evidence that ECT works so we just do not know whether it works …(but there IS lots of evidence it causes persistent/ permanent memory loss in many recipients)
Just come across Liz Truss saying “I hadn’t gone into politics to deal with floods or fix prisons.” Why not? Wouldn’t politics be much better if she felt her job was to fix such things? This is a fundamental problem with our system @RestIsPolitics https://t.co/GKU4BsUxqX
A true paradigm shift would start with recognition that the experiences we call mental illness are essentially “normal” human responses to psychosocial factors such as inequity, abuse, poverty, housing insecurity, unemployment and trauma.

@davidgmandel Sounds like the judge who asked me, a survivor of DV, if I was willing to "let my child grow up without a father".
I looked that judge right in the eye and responded I'd would rather my child not grow up without a mother.
The courtroom went completely still.
I got the order.
Police officer: I've been a police officer for over ten years and sometimes when I respond to a domestic call I say to the mother (who is the victim) 'how can you let your children go through this?'
Me: How many times in 10 years have a you said to the perpetrating father 'how could you put the mother of your children and your children through this?'
Police officer: *Silence*
And we wonder why survivors don't want to go the police and perpetrators feel permission to continue to abuse.... Gender double standards around parenting (low expectations for man as parents, high expectations for women as parents) is real and has serious, and sometimes, deadly impact. #StopBlamingMothers #StopIgnoringFathers @SafeandTogether https://t.co/LyazeZzB7e
Great article by someone who was once a poster girl for the mental illness model of distress, crying its value from the rooftops, only to discover over painful time that everything she'd been led to believe turned out to be oppressive, wrong & harmful.

Our survey of people in online support groups shows antidepressant withdrawal can be severe and protracted and that longer use predicts worse withdrawal effects @markhoro@ReadReadj https://t.co/vY8FZL46MV
"Abuse is main driver of mental ill health in women and girls, say psychiatrists."
In other words cPTSD, which Judith Herman was explicitly trying to get psychiatry to acknowledge about 40 years ago, but which was rejected.

Newborns exposed to SSRIs in the womb score lower on measures of neonatal adaptation, are more likely to experience respiratory distress, have longer hospital stays, and are more likely to need elevated levels of care

What jumps out to me from this whole tedious stupid thing: regardless of what you think of his work, mark has chosen to sacrifice any possibility of acceptance within the wider profession, and has invited endless scorn, harassment and ridicule from his colleagues. He chooses to endure this in pursuit of better outcomes for patients. And when he is disingenuously and publicly called out by this bully, over issues he is not directly responsible for, what does he do? He takes time out of his day to follow up with the publication and request these changes and then engages the troll with magnanimity and politeness. To see ANYONE making this man’s life harder breaks my heart. And it makes me wonder, of all marks many many critics: what have you risked, in your life, for the betterment of society? What chances have you taken? Do you know anything about how terrifying it can be when you decide to step outside the lines?
If you want to be a defender of orthodoxy, fine. But stop pretending it’s hard to do.
This idea that “London is in the grip of Islamists” is deluded and it’s awful - an obsession that thrives among a bizarre and dangerous coalition. No conservative MP should ever be spouting this stuff.
