I'm at the other place now and unlikely to return here in any significant way. If I haven't followed you there yet and I follow you on here let me know and I'll fix that.👍
DEI is not only good, but actually necessary and it is the minimum you can do to actually have decent working conditions under capitalism for marginalized people, especially in gaming.
Most people don't even know what it means.
After taking a long break from making videos I have made the decision to extend that break indefinitely as far as the YourFriendJacob YT channel is concerned. I am very unlikely to return to it.
Thanks for the years of support. That outlet really saved me. Time to move on.❤️🎮

Maybe this is a long way of saying - I wish I devoted more time into making "Indie Friends" a thing. 🙃
If I can get enough folks on board with it I'd love to bring that back but until then, vids on my failures (and occasional successes) learning gamedev coming soon...ish.
After working through learning basic gamedev one thought that keeps entering my brain is: "I don't think I could ever cover games from a critical perspective ever again"
This stuff is hard, and while I knew it was hard, I have even more appreciation for this now than before.
I want to just celebrate independent games, no matter how janky or spaghetti coded together or gloriously niche it may be. I don't even think I want to "review" games anymore. I'd rather just excitedly cheer on games I like rambling endlessly to anyone, or the void, either/or.
These are all really good games at a really good price.
I enjoyed all these games before but now that I'm trying to make my own 2D platformers, I appreciate them even more.
and0 is a very talented and underrated #indiedev imo. Grab these games if you love platformers!
This was about how implementing a buffered jump system broke many features of my character controller.
Did I figure out how to implement this the right way? Nope.
Did I say "screw it" and used an imperfect raycast solution instead? Yep!
Even a "simple" 2D platformer character controller/moveset is hard to nail. Making something functional is easy. Fine tuning and implementing until it's really responsive and satisfying to the player is a whole other story.
I followed @BrackeysTweet tutorial on making your first game in #Godot and added new levels, a main menu, credits scene, pause menu, coyote time, + you can play it from your browser on KB or gamepad!
I'm still really new to #gamedev, but it's a start!👍

Next, I'm working on a minimalist 2D platformer with lots of levels, speedrun timer, collectables, a more in depth character controller, and dipping my toes into some basic shaders. I'm just under two weeks in to learning Godot with no programming experience but loving it so far!

I think a lot of the backlash from Palworld is that it feels creatively bankrupt in a AI sort of way, even if it wasn't made with AI. Other pookemon clones/parodies are clearly made with love. Palworld "feels" like it was made to hit check off boxes on a least of features.
So now that I've learned this about Blender Guru - what are your go-to channels/sites for learning Blender? (Particularly for beginners)
