The reliably bonkers Gordon “Coming Collapse of China” Chang issues an impassioned plea: “Don’t let China rescue Cuba.”

His core demand: “The US needs to stop the Chinese from bringing in solar panels.”

Chang acknowledges that Cuba’s 10 million people are enduring blackouts because the island is under “an almost airtight American energy blockade”. He notes that the US has interdicted energy shipments since January, cut off Venezuelan oil after the kidnapping of Maduro, and threatened sanctions on any country that sells Cuba fuel.

This is a frankly genocidal – and patently illegal – energy siege: blackouts for several hours a day; thermoelectric plants starved of spare parts because of the blockade; some 225,000 people struggling for drinking water because the pumps have no power.

Awful as this all is, it’s not enough for Uncle Gordon. He sees China building 92 solar parks in Cuba and sending 10,000 photovoltaic systems to rural communities, health centres and day nurseries, and he wants it stopped. He sees Cuba making the fastest energy transition in history, and it’s keeping him up at night.

Gordon Chang is of course well known for spouting utter nonsense. He’s most famous for authoring “The Coming Collapse of China”, published in 2001, which predicted the fall of the CPC within a decade. In the quarter-century since, China has eliminated absolute poverty, become a science and technology powerhouse, become the world leader in green energy, and is the biggest trading partner of over two-thirds of the world’s countries. Fifteen years past his own deadline, Chang is writing about how to stop this collapsed state from putting solar panels on Caribbean rooftops.

It’s all a bit pathetic.
