In 2021, a salmonella outbreak moved through feeder birds across the western US so fast that pine siskins were dying in people's yards within days of each other. The cause traced back to crowded feeders.
A bird feeder concentrates dozens of individuals from different territories onto the same surface, multiple times a day, touching the same perches and seed with the same beaks. In nature these birds would rarely be in contact. At a dirty feeder they're sharing a pathogen highway.
Two diseases do most of the damage. Salmonellosis spreads through droppings contaminating seed and kills birds within days, sometimes visibly, sometimes not. Avian conjunctivitis swells a bird's eyes shut and leaves it unable to find food or see predators coming. Both move fastest in exactly the conditions a popular feeder creates: warm, damp, crowded.
The fix is unglamorous but it works. Empty and scrub with hot soapy water every one to two weeks, more often in wet weather. A 10 percent bleach solution rinsed thoroughly handles what soap can't. Let it dry completely before refilling, since damp feeders breed faster than dry ones.
So whilst its all over the news about a mosque door being set on fire in Ireland not a mention about the convent and the burial place of Saint Patrick himself in Downpatrick being reduced to ashes. The resting place of the patron saint of Ireland set on fire, and the legacy media has nothing to say. The politicians have nothing to say. Firefighters believe that it was a DELIBERATE ATTACK.
