How do you make an icon set memorable? One way is to give it a personality.
An icon is a very small canvas, so a small decision travels a long way. The problem is that most people only ever play with one or two properties. You would be surprised how much opens up once you start tweaking the others. Corner radius, angles, variable stroke widths, opacity, and that is barely the start. Stack a few of those and the personality takes care of itself.
What memorable icon sets have you seen recently?
One of my earliest icon projects was designing the four classic suit symbols. The client needed an icon designer with a deep understanding of how SVGs, because the deck was to be built with actual code. Talk about a niche in a niche.
I got it through Mudia. I had called him because I wasn't sure about leaning into iconography, and in that same conversation he mentioned @mark_oyk was looking for my exact skill set. I hadn't finished doubting myself before the answer showed up.
What I was really afraid of was that narrowing down would close doors. It did the opposite.
Most design tools will let you draw anything, at any size, at any stroke width. What they can't tell you is when your icon is sitting heavier than the one beside it. That part is on you.
The real work happens before you draw anything. It happens in the grid, the keylines and the proportions you decide to work with. It's the step most people skip, which is why their icons feel unrelated no matter how clean each one looks.
Do you set up a grid before you start designing icons?
Designing one icon could be easy. Designing twenty that look like they belong together is a completely different skill.
Inconsistency is the most common problem I see when reviewing icon sets, but It's a problem that can be solved by getting familiar with the principles of icon design.
What do you struggle with the most when creating icons?
Finally understood how to use colors.
I used to avoid colors because I always saw them as too much, and I was a big fan of minimalism. But then I realized that being minimal doesn’t mean using no colors.✨💃
All thanks to the Geneza Design School scholarship. @genezaschool
What is BLOK?
Blok is a construction company heavily inspired by building block toys.
Can’t wait to see the outcome of this brand design concept I have been working on.
