There is a particular kind of disappointment in not finding a grave.
I went looking for one woman at the Cemetery of the Artists in Friedenau, Berlin: Marlene Dietrich. The most German of all Germans — and the one who refused to play the role Hitler and Goebbels wrote for her.
The cemetery is small, but every headstone argues for its own significance — sculptures, manifestos in stone, tiny private museums of grief. Hers was not among them. I almost walked away.
Then I asked an AI for coordinates, and reluctantly followed a blue dot across gravel paths until it stopped at an unremarkable plot.
Standing there, I understood: an entire epoch is buried in this quiet corner. A woman who was offered Berlin, Hollywood, and the Third Reich — and chose instead to put on an American uniform, sing for soldiers at the front, and quietly fund the escape of Jews who could still be saved.
History remembers her glamour. I think it should remember her refusal.
