The Marvels 5/10 Generic MCU entry with a couple of scenes that feel like they're trying too hard to become viral. It's great that it bucks the trend of the 2.5 hr tentpole but it was edited to death. Iman Vellani's Ms. Marvel and her onscreen family steal the movie.

Oppenheimer 70mm IMAX 9/10 Only Nolan would shoot a 3 hour biopic of mostly people talking in IMAX and somehow make it more thrilling than an action movie. You've not really seen this movie until you've stared into the eyes of an 8-story-tall closeup of Cillian Murphy's face.

M:I – Dead Reckoning Part One 8/10 Tom Cruise doing Tom Cruise-y things: running, drifting, motorcycling and doing lunatic stunts in a tight 2h43m.

Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny 6/10 Not great but also not terrible. Pretty much the only reason to see this movie is to watch Ford as Indy one last time.

Fast X 5/10 Has fully collapsed under its own mythology and ran out of stupid/crazy ideas. Now just recycling old tricks and characters. An A.I. must have written this, right???

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 8/10 Wacky and imaginative, naturally, but also emotional, and refreshingly untethered from the larger MCU.

John Wick Chapter 4 7/10 Case of more is less. So much crazy action that it becomes tedious at points. There's a brilliant action movie in there with 30 minutes edited out.

Creed III 7/10 Finally shed Rocky completely and is able to stand on its own. Lots of interesting new takes on boxing action, though not all of them worked. The climatic match is a bit of a letdown.

Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania 5/10 A generic Star Wars-y sci-fi adventure with none of the elements that made the first two Ant-Man so entertaining (funny and inventive size changing antics; small, grounded stories; and Rudd being Rudd). Majors as Kang is great though.

Avatar: The Way of Water 8/10 More reboot than sequel, retreads many of the same emotional beats and plots, but when it comes to CGI and action, there's Cameron and then there's the rest of Hollywood.

Wakanda Forever 8/10 The sequel works even without its magnetic main star, which is quite a feat, and serves as a moving tribute to Chadwick Boseman. Despite the very long running time there’s not a dull moment.

Bullet Train 5/10 Instead of anime John Wick on shinkansen, it's mediocre Pulp Fiction wannabe on local train.

Thor: Love and Thunder 6/10 Tries way too hard to outdo Ragnarok that it ends up feeling forced and excessive. There’s the MCU’s first romcom jammed in there somewhere. Some parts I loved though: Bale; Russell and his tutu; and Portman’s arms.

Jurassic World: Dominion 4/10 Has lost all sense of wonder and has zero scares. It's just a barely-run-of-the-mill action movie more suitable for streaming. If you like dinos, watch the awe-inspiring Apple TV series Prehistoric Planet instead.
