Israel's allies (including Canada) watch - seemingly/deliberately powerless - as the IDF resumes its genocidal assault against Palestinians in Gaza. Might we at least expect governments (@MarkJCarney, @melaniejoly) not only to remind Benjamin Netanyahu -- but demand and insist -- that he must comply with the still current (nearly 14 months on) and binding (it's the law) provisional measures from the @CIJ_ICJ issued on January 26, 2024, ordering Israel to:
- prevent the commission of all acts coming within the Genocide Convention, including killing, bodily/mental harm and conditions of life intended to "destroy" Palestinians in Gaza, and ensure that the IDF does not commit any such acts (the wrenching civilian toll from the vicious attacks of the past two days is anything but preventing and ensuring that such acts do not occur);
- prevent and punish incitement to commit genocide (hyperbolic threats of negotiations "only under fire", the resumed strikes being "only the beginning", and having the weapons needed to "finish the job" not exactly pointing in that direction); and
- "take immediate and effective measures to enable the provision of urgently needed basic services and humanitarian assistance to address the adverse conditions of life faced by Palestinians in the Gaza Strip" (blocking humanitarian aid and cutting off electricity being of course the precise opposite of that).
Palestinian lives matter.
International law matters.
Let's start there.

Seventeen years ago Chinese authorities imprisoned a Canadian Uyghur refugee on false charges of terrorism and murder. Why did Canada never bring him home? Listen to "Extradition: The Search for Huseyin Celil" with @yusufzine https://t.co/MvO7oftiUJ
An Indigenous artist made this papier marche olive tree. I watched it come together.
At 5:59 pm, this degenerate pushed it over. Exactly what rabid settlers do to the olive groves of Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
@occupyuoft was a microcosm in many ways.
“For Bisan”
Bravo to @yusufzine & team for telling the story of Huseyin Celil, Canadian citizen & Uyghur kidnapped 18 yrs ago & illegally detained in a Chinese concentration camp since. This gripping investigation showcases the Chinese prison state & Canada's failure to protect its own.
"Dear Huseyin... Know that there are Canadians here who are still fighting to keep your name and your story alive... Stay strong Huseyin. And hold on to hope. There's a lot of people here waiting for you."
Huge appreciation to @yusufzine & team for telling the story of Uyghur-Canadian Huseyin Celil's 18 years of cruel, unlawful detention in China. In a riveting 6 episode podcast he takes us with him as he turns over every stone possible, seeking information about Huseyin's fate, but meets cruel deadends in China & largely empty platitudes in Canada.
The series ends with a heartfelt letter to the prison where Huseyin is thought to be jailed, in the hopes it reaches him.
Very important piece written by my mom - @JasminZine! A must read.
