So what is lost in AI literary translation ⁉️🤔

🤖 AI translation into English is readable and often ‘fine’.
✍️ But human translation is valued more, especially on a closer look, for clarity and immersion.

‼️ Both vary in quality BUT AI varies more, even within a single book.

We introduce LAIT 🥛: Literary AI Translation.

A dataset of 31 opening excerpts (~8K words) from recent literature, along with their translations from French, Polish and Japanese to English.

Lait includes:
- AI and human translations into English
- chunk & paragraph-level alignment
- 1K readers’ comments
- 2K ratings & preference judgments
- 7.2K span-level annotations
