40 years ago, Madonna nursed her best friend who was dying of AIDS. Now she’s immortalised him with a name check in her new song Danceteria and I am blown away by the love.
obsessed with this part of the Confessions II film where Madonna recreates the famous story about how she began her career: she hands DJ Mark Kamins a tape with a demo for her song Everybody and he plays it at Danceteria, which eventually gets her record deal with Warner Bros.
Run the closing credits of Confessions II – The Film to the end and you get the full song-by-song credits for the album’s first six tracks. One detail jumps out. “Danceteria” is built on an interpolation of “Walk on the Wild Side,” Lou Reed’s song from 1972.
It can look like a random pull — a famous hook dropped onto a dance track. It isn’t. The two things are bridged by the same place.
Danceteria was the New York club where Madonna’s career began. It was there that DJ Mark Kamins first played her demo to a real crowd, setting off the chain that led to her Sire deal.
“Walk on the Wild Side” is the song that immortalised that exact downtown New York — Andy Warhol’s Factory and its superstars: Holly Woodlawn, Candy Darling, Jackie Curtis, Joe Dallesandro.
