I used to think that The One Safe Place was @ramseycampbell1’s scariest book, but after reading this one I’m now not so sure. Saying you checked all the doors in the house after reading something is a bit of a cliche. I obviously didn’t do that, and you can’t prove otherwise…
@mondoheather That is a fantastic tribute to a genuine screen icon. It was a real shock when I heard that Udo Kier had passed. For some reason I thought he’d be around forever. Your piece is the sensuous send off the great man deserved.
@mondoheather@VinegarSyndrome Love Tromeo & Juliette. It always astonishes me in a bizarre & heartwarming way that Troma were thanked in the credits of Louis Malle’s My Dinner With Andre. Lloyd Kaufman was the production manager on the film and the company provided support. A Toxie / Andre double bill?
@mondoheather I love Time After Time and David Warner generally. Have you seen Providence which he was in a few years prior? It’s one of the most underrated films of the 70s, a story about the idea of storytelling which has interesting parallels with David Lynch’s Lost Highway & Mulholland Dr.
@mondoheather I must have had a sheltered childhood because I’d never heard of Stephen Gammell. Some of his illustrations are genuinely haunting…he’s a remarkable artist. This might be the highlight of your Halloween recommendations so far.
@_HeatherBuckley I wasn’t aware that the passage of time has been so brutally speedy, but I’ve been prepared to celebrate this anniversary for many years.
@mondoheather@26mfhpod Until five minutes ago, I’d never heard Jimmie Jones, but having now listened to it you’re right…it is weirdly upbeat. I may have some cool points, but I still defer to your superior musical knowledge.
@26mfhpod@mondoheather I only wish I was that cool back then, but I was into The Vapors by age 8. I still have the single of Turning Japanese…a bit crackly now.
@mondoheather@26mfhpod Not only is Flame fantastic, the opening scenes were filmed just 100 metres from where I lived in Sheffield back then. I was way too young to appreciate that fact at the time…I was 2 years old.
@_HeatherBuckley Such a great show, and I love Robin Weigert’s hard drinking, foul mouthed version of Calamity Jane. She wouldn’t have put up with half the shit Doris Day had to.
