When I create sprites, I usually follow a rule of extracting and reusing colors from the original artwork.
For example, this one was made using colors taken from the original Grandpa sprite.

For example, if you download Morris’s individual portrait and Grandpa’s individual portrait separately, one of the characters may still appear in the original male version. However, in the non-giftable NPC collection, all of them will appear in their female versions.

Difference between the individual portraits and the non-giftable NPC collection:
Characters that share the same file — such as Morris’s construction sprite or Grandpa’s sprite — are fully integrated in the non-giftable NPC collection.
