Ethiopia’s 7th General Elections a milestone in democratization - African Union
************
The African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security Ambassador Bankole Adeoye praises Ethiopia’s 7th General Elections as a milestone in the country’s democratization process.
Ambassador Adeoye made the remarks at a high-level forum in Addis Ababa, where the National Election Board of Ethiopia (NEBE) announced the final results of the 7th General Elections.
He noted that the African Union deployed an Election Observation Mission to Ethiopia led by former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He said the mission has already submitted its preliminary findings, including a set of recommendations to NEBE.
He described Ethiopia’s 7th General Elections as “another milestone” in the country’s democratization journey.
Ambassador Adeoye reaffirmed African Union’s commitment to supporting democratic governance and credible electoral processes across the continent.
“The African Union is committed to supporting peaceful democratic consolidation based on the principle of democratic legitimacy,” he stated.
He also expressed confidence in Ethiopia’s continued progress in peacebuilding and democratic governance.

Today, at the 'Digital for Excellence' summit, we officially inaugurated the Unified MESOB Application, Africa's first unified digital service application that brings services from across institutions onto a single platform. This milestone is a source of immense national pride and a testament to what deliberate, focused investment in technology can deliver.
MESOB one-stop service is critical economic infrastructure. It saves citizens' time, closes corruption gaps, and strengthens institutional integrity on the government side. Above all, it stands as a clear demonstration that Ethiopia's ambitions are not wishes, they are realities we build with our own hands and our own capacity.
I call on us to consolidate this achievement, share this experience with our African brothers and sisters, and move forward with the determination to deliver even more!

Though for years, parts of the international media have been predicting Ethiopia’s downfall, reality doesn’t always cooperate with the stories people want to tell.
Here is when an old adage still applies: the camel keeps moving while the dogs bark.
Despite all the noise, recognition keeps coming. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s nomination as one of the honorees at the 2026 100 Most Notable Africans Leadership and Business Summit in Marrakech is a good example.
Alongside Zambia’s President Hakainde Hichilema and former African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, he is being recognized for leadership and contribution to Africa’s development.
People can argue, criticize, and speculate all they want. That’s their right. But at some point, results speak louder than commentary.
History has never paid much attention to the noise. It pays attention to what was actually done.

What we set out to achieve in three years, we have accomplished in less than two. Since the launch of the 5 Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative on July 23, 2024, Ethiopia has reached 5,005,146 enrollments across Programming, Data Analysis, Android Development, and Artificial Intelligence fundamentals. This is our testament to our people's determination and limitless potential.
This milestone is not where our ambition ends, it is where it accelerates further. With 7 million enrollments by August 2026 firmly within our vision, I call upon every Ethiopian to be part of this national mission.
To our young students, this summer is your opportunity. Do not let it pass idly. Register, learn, and return to your classrooms not just as students, but as certified digital leaders. The courses are free, the certification is internationally recognized.
The future you build starts today!

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programmed (UNDP), has concluded a four-day training program for diplomats focusing on international relations and geopolitical event analysis.
Such trainings provide diplomats with insights on how volatile global dynamics impact the international governance system and the balance of power among nations and regional blocs. Furthermore, it equips diplomats with the capacity to look into the positive and negative impacts of such events, conduct trend analyses, and safeguard the country's national interests.
These training sessions are an integral part of the Ministry's ongoing three-year institutional reform program, particularly the human resource development aspect which emphasizes on producing highly competent and ethically grounded diplomats to secure our national interests.
Residents of Addis Ababa have turned out in droves across all polling stations, lining up well before opening hours, and have now begun casting their ballots.
The public truly understands what is at stake! They have proven to be a resilient people, unyielding to coordinated media campaigns from both home and abroad.
Indeed, by exercising their democratic rights, citizens woke up early and turned out in massive numbers. They are currently casting their votes in an election that will shape the future political, economic, and social development of both the city and the nation. The maturation of this democratic practice is expected to not only fortify the country but also serve as a model for other nations.

The people of Ethiopia are an extraordinary and remarkable people. Other than the Creator, who can truly know and assess our people in their entirety? Through this year’s election, Ethiopians have once again shown the world that they are a people with a rich culture, deep patriotism, and the ability to safeguard the common good.
On this historic day:
* Citizens who were not intimidated by the cold and darkness of the night,
* Who were not deterred by the midday sun or sudden rain,
* Whom weddings, funerals, childbirth, and other social obligations did not prevent from participating,
* Who were not wearied by long lines,
* Whose physical disabilities did not stop them from casting their vote,
* Those whose illness and old age did not prevent from witnessing the hope of their country,
* Who were not exhausted by carrying their infant children; the future inheritors of the nation,
* And above all, whom the shouting and threats of enemies could not intimidate or stop;
The perseverance you demonstrated amid many challenges and hardships, against all odds, was a contribution made for democracy and for the very survival of the nation. For this, you deserve heartfelt gratitude.
It is a privilege to serve such a people. Therefore, may those who have been elected honor the trust placed in them and serve this people, with integrity and sincerity! A people who have paid a great price for the democratic system. May you be worthy of that responsibility.
The louder the attempts to discredit Ethiopia and Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, the clearer it becomes that a self-sufficient Ethiopia unsettles those who favor a dependent and weakened Africa.
Ethiopia faces challenges, sabotage, and resistance disguised as democracy and human rights. Selective outrage and fabricated narratives cannot deter a determined Ethiopia.
Ethiopia prioritizes dignity, reform, and sovereignty over dependency. Defamation, pressure, and distorted storytelling won’t sever the bond between a determined people and leadership committed to national transformation.
That era is fading. Ethiopia stands firm, confident, and progressing on its own terms. Its ascent is inevitable.
I couldn’t agree more,
As His Excellency Prime Minister Abiy rightly noted, the question today is no longer about the voters but the elected.
Now the real test begins for those who were elected. Can they live up to the trust placed in them? Can they serve with integrity and leave a mark that matters?
The ballot was the people’s responsibility. What comes next is the responsibility of the elected.
The ballot has spoken; history awaits the response.

Monday 1 June 2026, AA, Ethiopia.
I cast my vote early this morning in Ethiopia’s 7th National Election. I am very encouraged by the strong voter turnout and the calm, well-organized voting process. The dedication shown by citizens across the country highlights our shared commitment to democracy and the continued development of our nation. I urge all eligible voters to take part in the election and support the party they believe is best positioned to advance peace, stability, and long-term economic growth. Every vote counts, and together we can help build a brighter future for Ethiopia
