A network of old and young people who left alternative care and those still in it especially residential child care facilities, foster care in Zimbabwe.

In just one year, 91 young people leaving care died by suicide. Ninety-one lives lost—sons, daughters, siblings, friends. And these are only the ones we know about.

We are calling for urgent cross-party support for an amendment to the Children’s Wellbeing Bill—one that would strengthen corporate parenting by changing the duty from simply “being alert” to “having due regard.” This is not a technical adjustment. It is a life-saving one.

This government has the ability, and the responsibility, to stop this tragedy from continuing. Strengthening this duty could save lives. We cannot afford to look away.

Why the Study on #ClimateChange?

-The devastating impacts of the triple planetary crisis – climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss – on children and their rights are gaining increasing attention. In particular, climate change, the focus of this study, is wreaking havoc across the world, including in Africa. It is a problem which has been described as ‘a long-term threat unlike any we have faced’.

"As we all recall, the Continental study on #ChildrenWithoutParental care, conducted by the committee, demonstrated the growing challenges facing the estimated 35 million #children without parental care in #Africa.
These children continue to grow up deprived of parental care and disproportionately subjected to suffer from different forms of neglect, abuse, exploitation and violence under different circumstances.
Most of these children lack access to fundamental rights enshrined in the African Charter on the Rights and Welfare of the Child and other continental and international policy instruments. Majority of the state parties have a long way to go when it comes to, among others, enacting or properly implementing relevant child rights policies, operationalizing proper regulatory frameworks, effecting minimum quality standards, and minimum skill requirements for a multi-sector workforce to address the needs of the children."
