An MMI News review has identified at least 26 women and girls killed, or reported dead in suspected killings, across Cameroon between August 1 and September 11, 2026.
The victims include teenage girls, young women, mothers and pregnant women. Some were reportedly killed by husbands or boyfriends. Others died in suspected sexual attacks, stabbings, shootings, poisoning cases and other violent circumstances still under investigation.
Among those documented are Philomène Ndambaki in Bertoua, 16-year-old Ekassy Samantha, 19-year-old Diane Yidi Ebabi, Daïna Tikeng, Irène Dorothée Ngo, Ewana Flore, Bronhilda Nofendo, Modestine T., Delphine Bih, Crescence Merline Beguel, Tchos Blandine, Chea Géraldine and Eyenga Konga Jamelle.
The review also found cases involving children, including a three-year-old girl in Douala, a young girl in Mfou and a seven-year-old girl in Yaoundé. Several other female deaths remain under investigation and have not been included in the 26-case total because there is not yet enough evidence to establish that they were killings.
MMI News also found errors in some figures circulating online. Several cases had been duplicated, misdated or presented as femicides before a gender-related motive had been established. Our review therefore uses the broader category of female victims of reported or suspected killings, while distinguishing intimate-partner killings and unresolved deaths.
The six-week toll comes months after the government revealed that 50 femicides had already been recorded between January and April 2026, alongside 1,599 reported cases of gender-based violence.
Cameroon has announced measures to fight violence against women and children, but the latest cases raise difficult questions about prevention: How many victims had previously reported threats or abuse? How quickly can women at immediate risk obtain protection? How many cases reach court, and how many perpetrators are convicted?
The true number may be higher. Cameroon has no publicly accessible real-time database documenting every female homicide, and some deaths in rural communities receive little or no national coverage.
MMI News will continue documenting the cases, correcting the record where necessary and tracking investigations.

A 24-year-old Cameroonian woman identified as Yomi Mbakob Virginie Sonya, has been killed in a suspected knife attack in Erkner, a town in the German state of Brandenburg near Berlin, with a 29-year-old man now placed in pre-trial detention.
The attack occurred at about 6:30 a.m. on Monday, August 31, 2026, on Leo-Hendrik-Baekeland-Straße, according to Brandenburg Police. Virginie suffered injuries so severe that she died shortly afterwards despite attempts to save her.
Her family has identified her more fully as Yomi Mbakob Virginie Sonya. She was the mother of a three-year-old girl. A fundraising campaign has since been launched to help return her body to Cameroon for burial.
Police said the suspect initially fled the scene but was later located and arrested following information provided by witnesses.
On Wednesday, an arrest warrant was issued against the 29-year-old and he was remanded in custody. German media, citing prosecutors, say the suspect is a Congolese national.
Prosecutors are investigating the case on suspicion of murder. Authorities say a dispute concerning contact with the former couple’s minor child is being considered as a possible motive, although the exact circumstances and motive remain under investigation.
German authorities say a knife is believed to have been used in the killing.
Virginie’s death has also prompted an outpouring of grief within the Cameroonian community, while her family is seeking support to repatriate her remains to Cameroon.

MK's THOUGHTS N° 121-2026.
Those who hurt you want to hear your complaints, your words of pain. As long as you say nothing, they are at a loss. Why give them the satisfaction of hearing your voice or reading your words? Take the time to learn the art of silence, for it will never betray you.
