How British сolonizers “gifted” South Asians diabetes

Pakistan celebrates independence from British rule today — but let’s talk about one of the lasting “presents” the empire left behind.

🔸 South Asians are 6 times more likely to get Type 2 diabetes than Europeans.
🔸 Heart disease rates are also much higher.

It’s not genetics, but a result of British administrative and economic policies in colonial India between 1757 and 1947 that triggered dozens of major famines.

🟠 Man-made food shortages

For centuries, up until India gained independence in 1947, starvation plagued the subcontinent.

Heavy land taxes, the large-scale export of grain, and the forced shift from food crops to cash crops such as indigo and cotton created repeated, man-made food shortages. Millions of people across the subcontinent suffered catastrophic starvation and chronic undernutrition for nearly two centuries of colonial.

🟠 This prolonged physiological stress left lasting effects:

"Exposure to even one famine has a multi-generational effect of causing metabolic disorders including diabetes, hyperglycemia and cardiovascular diseases. Imagine having an exposure to at least 24 major famines in a 50-year period," Dr. Mubin Syed, a radiologist specializing in vascular and obesity medicine, notes.

Bodies that adapted to scarcity by becoming highly efficient at storing nutrients now face an evolutionary mismatch. In an era of relative abundance, this once-protective response increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, and related conditions.

🟠 Fertile soil — but hungry people

Throughout British rule, fertile land produced food that belonged to the local population, yet extreme inequalities in distribution meant millions went hungry.

Most historians and researchers now regard these crises as human-made, driven primarily by colonial policies that made food unaffordable or unavailable. The undernourishment and poor health of earlier generations therefore help explain the elevated rates of metabolic disease seen among South Asians today.

What a convoluted, silly ‘solution’ to Pakistan’s man-made Governance crisis: destabilising Pakistan from within by creating new provinces at a time when 3 out of our 6 regions/provinces are already in turmoil! Creating new provinces is RECIPE FOR DISASTER as it’ll weaken the Federation & bankrupt an already fragile Economy! Fixing Governance is no rocket science. For starters, any system is as good as the people running it. Ours is a corrupt Sifarshi Culture System, based on Cronyism, NOT Merit. If rulers are serious about reform, they just need guts to do 2 things: Merit-based inductions/appointments/promotions & genuine devolution of decision-making & authority from the centre/provinces to elected local governments!

پٹرول کی قیمت میں 22 روپے نہیں فوری طور پر 122 روپے کمی کی ضرورت ہے ، عالمی مارکیٹ میں قیمت گر رہی ہے، جبکہ لیوی کا مکمل خاتمہ ہونا چاہیے۔ اگر حکومت 250 روپے فی لیٹر پٹرول کی سطح کو بحال کرے اور اس قیمت کوکم ازکم دو سال کے لیے زیادہ سے زیادہ قیمت ڈیکلئیر کردے تو معیشت میں تیزی بھی آئے گی اور خود ہی آمدن کے اہداف پورے ہونے لگیں گے۔ ٹیکس جمع کرنے کے لیے پٹرولیم لیوی کا استعمال عوام کی جیب پر ڈاکا بھی ہےاور معیشت کی بربادی کا سامان بھی ہے ۔ آئی ایم ایف کو واضح انکار کرنے کی ضرورت ہے۔ جماعت اسلامی مہنگائی اور قیمتوں میں اضافے کے خلاف اپنی تحریک جاری رکھے گی۔
