September 11 didn’t begin as a day history would remember. It began with alarm clocks. Coffee. Traffic. Rushed goodbyes. People walked out their doors fully expecting to walk back through them. There were dinner plans. Birthdays still to celebrate. Trips still to take. Calls still to return. People they expected to grow old with. There was supposed to be more time. And then, in a single morning, the world learned there could be a before and an after. For those of us who watched that day unfold, we don’t need a history book to remember it. We remember where we were. The room. The television. Who was beside us. The disbelief of watching something our minds couldn’t quite understand was actually happening. Some moments don’t just stay in history. They stay in you. And September 11 did. The images stayed. The disbelief stayed. The feeling of watching the world change right in front of us stayed. But for thousands of families, what stayed was something far more personal. It was someone they loved who never came home. A parent. A husband or wife. A son or daughter. A brother or sister. A friend. Someone they expected to have so much more life with. Their loss continued into September 12. Into birthdays. Holidays. Weddings. Graduations. Empty chairs. And countless moments when someone should have been there. They have carried that absence for 25 years. And maybe that’s what “Never Forget” really asks of the rest of us. Not simply to remember what happened. To remember who was lost. Because time has a way of turning tragedy into dates, statistics and history lessons. But behind every name was an entire world. Someone who was loved. Someone who was needed. Someone whose future should have continued. A world that mattered to someone. A world that is still missed by someone.
