The US federal income tax is progressive, but that's cherry-picking.

Overall (all taxes), it's only mildly so. State sales/property taxes are regressive on the middle/poor. Europe taxes the middle class more via VAT/payroll but delivers universal services Americans pay for privately.

Net burden isn't a 'pittance.' Higher US wealth inequality also explains the wealthy's tax share.
