If our small minds, for some convenience, divide the universe into parts, physics, biology, geology, astronomy, psychology, and so on-remember that nature does not know it…

🐈⬛ The Black Cat in the Dark
Folklore said the glow came from inside the cat, a small lantern lit for the otherworld. Physics says otherwise. The light isn’t the cat’s. It’s yours, coming back.
Your retina runs on rods and cones. Cones support color vision and fine detail in brighter light; rods trade color discrimination for sensitivity as illumination falls. At dusk, color fades before the world disappears.
Cats are built for that dusk. Their retinas are rich in rods, and behind them sits the tapetum lucidum, a reflective tissue layer that sends incoming light back through the retina for another opportunity to be detected. That eerie eyeshine is reflected light, not light the cat makes.
Black fur absorbs more visible light than it reflects, so the outline thins against the dark. The cat hasn’t vanished. Fewer photons are reaching your eyes from its edges.
Which is why the old stories made the black cat a familiar. The cat is a witch’s second pair of eyes, the household spirit that could see what you couldn’t. A hunter that sees better than you do in dim light looks like a creature with one foot in another world.
It isn’t. It’s better adapted to the dark than you are, wearing your own light back at you.
