I am still saying it, and this is coming from someone who finds physics fascinating: medicine is way beyond anything engineering will ever accomplish.

An aircraft is a mighty feat. We designed it. A space rocket? We designed it. Electromagnetic technology, bridges, computers, all of these are incredible feats, but ultimately things we designed and built from the ground up.

Now think about medicine. Humans are opening up a body they did not design, navigating structures they did not create, knowing what to cut, what not to touch, what connects to what, where something needs to go and what carries it there and then putting the whole thing back together.

That is, and will probably forever remain, mightier to me than anything we have ever achieved as engineers.

Two quick thoughts (of many) I have about the Netflix documentary, “Death of the Pastor's Wife”:

1. One thing that really bothered me throughout this documentary was its failure to recognize that the very origin of this so-called “relationship” was abuse. Everyone, including her family, repeatedly referred to it as a “relationship” and/or “adultery.” Yet at no point did the documentary meaningfully address the fact that he was her pastor and occupied a position of significant power, authority, and trust in her life. That power differential is fundamental to understanding what happened. This was not simply an affair between two people on equal footing. The abuse began with the grooming.

I wish the filmmakers had interviewed an expert on clergy sexual abuse who could have explained these dynamics. That omission matters because so many people have experienced this type of abuse and continue to carry tremendous shame and blame themselves, believing they willingly participated in an “affair” or “relationship” when, in reality, they were groomed and exploited by someone who used a position of spiritual authority and trust to gain access to them; and

2. Is it truly just a coincidence that the former spouses of JP” Miller and his current wife, Suzie Skinner, both committed suicide? I mean…seriously?? 🤔
