GOVERNMENT LAUNCHES FERTILISER DISTRIBUTION TO FARMERS.

The Government has launched the distribution of 173,913 bags of fertiliser to targeted farmers across Uganda, with the goal of restoring soil fertility, boosting productivity and improving household incomes.

The fertiliser, procured from ITRACOM Fertilizers Uganda, will be distributed free of charge to eligible farmers and farmer groups, particularly those involved in strategic value chains such as coffee, tea and cocoa.

Speaking at the launch, Agriculture Minister Hon. Frank Tumwebaze emphasised the importance of using the right inputs, in the right quantities and at the right time, guided by soil testing and agricultural extension services.

MAAIF has also put measures in place to ensure transparency and accountability. The fertiliser will be clearly marked “Government of Uganda – Not for Sale”, and beneficiaries will not be charged.

The intervention is part of Government’s wider effort to move farmers from low productivity subsistence farming to commercial, productive and profitable agriculture.

Ultimately, the success of the programme will be measured by what happens on the farm, better yields, higher incomes and improved livelihoods for Ugandan farmers.

Uganda Calls for Deeper EAC Industrial Integration, Citing ASEAN and EU Lessons

KAMPALA:
Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives, Hon. Sanjay Tanna, has called on East African Community (EAC) member states to draw lessons from successful regional economic blocs as they pursue industrialisation and economic transformation.

Speaking on lessons from successful regional economic blocs, Tanna said the EAC does not need to “reinvent the wheel,” but should learn from regions that have successfully used industrialisation and regional integration to reduce poverty and expand economic opportunities.

He cited the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as one of the key examples, pointing to the region’s model of “flying geese” industrialisation, in which countries specialise in different stages of production and build interconnected manufacturing value chains.

“For example, components for a single electronic device are produced across Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam before final assembly,” Tanna said.

He said the model offers an important lesson for the EAC, arguing that individual countries should not attempt to develop complete industries independently.

“The lesson for the EAC is clear: we must stop trying to build entire industries alone. We must share production lines across our borders to build regional value chains,” he said.

Tanna also pointed to the European Union (EU) as another important example of the benefits of regional economic cooperation. He said the EU’s approach to managing strategic industrial resources under a unified framework demonstrated how economic integration can contribute to both prosperity and stability.

According to the minister, the EAC should similarly strengthen coordination among member states by harmonising industrial standards, eliminating non-tariff barriers and facilitating the movement of manufacturing inputs across borders.

He called for the seamless, duty-free movement of intermediate manufacturing inputs within the region, saying this would enable industries to operate across borders and strengthen the competitiveness of East African products.

Tanna’s remarks come amid growing calls for deeper EAC economic integration, with regional value chains, industrial cooperation and removal of trade barriers seen as critical to unlocking the bloc’s manufacturing potential.

The minister stressed that stronger regional industrial cooperation would allow EAC countries to complement one another rather than compete unnecessarily, creating larger markets, more efficient production systems and greater opportunities for investment and employment.
