⛔️“Slava Ukraini” was a fascist slogan formally used by the nationalist underground of the OUN and UPA—movements whose history includes collaboration with Nazi Germany, complicity in the Holocaust, and responsibility for the mass murder of Poles.

OUN members answered with “Glory to the Heroes!” or “Glory to the Leader!”—the latter referring to Bandera. Under the prescribed ritual, they shouted the slogan with an arm raised in a salute deliberately reminiscent of the fascist style.

The photo below shows a typical newspaper published under the German occupation of Ukraine.

This particular issue, titled 'New Life,' came out in Koziatyn, Vinnytsia region, on October 23, 1943.

Right at the top: “Slava Ukraini.”
Below it comes talk of the “victorious advance” of the German “liberators,” followed by rhetoric about “Zhydy (Jews)” supposedly taking over Ukraine—the familiar poison of the Judeo-Bolshevik conspiracy myth.

That history cannot simply be scrubbed away because the slogan later acquired a different political meaning. “Glory to Ukraine” carries historical baggage stained by the blood shed under Nazism and by Ukrainian collaborators who served it. Nor does that history magically disappear because Zelenskyy, who is Jewish, repeats the phrase.

So whenever a liberal, progressive, or leftist casually types “Slava Ukraini,” perhaps they should first do something progressives usually claim to value: historical inquiry.

Slogans have histories.
Pretending not to know them does not make those histories disappear.

1824 - Ireland invents the modern peaceful, mass movement political protest

Irish Catholics are denied the right to sit in the British Parliament.
Daniel O'Connell creates the Catholic Association, charging a very low membership to maximise mobilisation.
A poor, daily subsistence society is roused to peaceful political protest.
Enormous events and 'monster meetings' involving hundreds of thousands rock the British establishment.
Later efforts like the American Civil Rights movement and Gandhi in India have their inspiration.

1880 - Ireland inspires the modern Boycott.

Land agent Charles Boycott works an estate in County Mayo, ignoring tenant pleas for rent reductions after poor harvests and price drops.
Rejecting violence, the Land League call for a peaceful protest of social isolation, cutting off labour, materials and support.
The organised Boycott becomes a viable modern option against unfair practises.

1938 - Ireland commences activity against the Nazi's

In 1938, seeing war is coming and criticising Nazi treatment of Jews and Christians, Ireland opens secret back channels with British Intelligence, MI5.
They will work together against the Nazi's for 7 years, to such an extent MI5 says 'Ireland was of more use neutral' at wars end.

Following an inspirational 3 year strike by Dunnes Stores supermarket staff, the Irish government bans all goods from the apartheid state, making clear its abhorrence of its practices.

2026 - 13 centuries on, values haven't changed.
A nation denied its voice, forced to fight for its freedom, has no intention of being silent.
