Algeria seized the farms and the oil and still can’t feed itself.

After independence in 1962, Ben Bella handed abandoned French farms and factories to state worker committees.

When Boumediene took power in a 1965 coup, he nationalized the oil and gas in 1971 so the rents could fund nearly everything the state did.

His Agrarian Revolution broke the big farms into cooperatives and promised a thousand socialist villages, yet only about 200 were built and the land never produced enough.

Before the mid 1980s oil crash the money covered the shortages. After prices collapsed, young Algerians rioted in 1988 over empty shelves and no jobs, and the army killed hundreds.
That ended one party rule and opened a civil war that killed up to 200,000.

Algeria still runs on oil and gas.
