Before you focus on solutions to their problem, hear them out, like really listen, acknowledge their situation, summarize what you heard them say, and ask if you've understood & validate them. Then, ask if they're looking for a solution before offering one.

What to do when your partner is talking about problems they're facing at work, w/ family or w/ a friend.  

Listen to learn, not to reply. 

Instead of hearing your partner's words and the feelings behind them, it’s common to pay more attention (voluntarily or involuntarily).
