Last Spring, Washington State hit a peak of 532 cases of COVID. The streets were empty to control it. Today we have twice as many and we talk of opening. Political posturing has made public health the enemy and undermined its basic mission. #zerocovid

Kulforff and Bhattcharya throw the weight of their Harvard and Stanford credentials behind flawed, uninformed, and deadly arguments. I might expect a statistician and a health economist, to get the epi wrong, but they didn’t even get the math right.https://t.co/PQY5PWqjSa
COVID mortality is more than 1000-fold higher among old vs young, so absurd that the WH pandemic plan mandates vaccines for low-risk working-age people, while it is silent on the critical task of vaccinating more older high-risk retirees.

In other words, if we do the three most difficult and expensive things (which we should do) we might be able to reduce the burden of the easiest, least expensive option by an unspecified amount.
Huh?
We are all tired of public health precautions, but consider this.
Taiwan is headed to a full lockdown because of a major outbreak.
Taiwan has 8 cases per million people.
The US is averaging 100 cases per day.
We are taking our masks off.

The Hidden 4th Wave
SARS-COV-2 didn't care that we wanted to be done with the pandemic. Incidence and death rates have fallen, but they leveled off and rose as vaccination rates soared. Improving rates of immunity hid a 4th wave.
Canada should aim for ZeroCOVID whilst we have the increasing cover of vaccinations rather than the hope/prayer strategy that vaccines will work on variants. "Doctors call for cross-country circuit-breaker lockdown to stamp out COVID-19 spread" | CBC News https://t.co/otQL540YfA
Today's paper in the Lancet puts another nail into the coffin of the GBD, Lockdowns-don't-work, herd immunity through infection nonsense. #zerocovid works!

@Neurofourier The people who relied on science occasionally got it wrong until the science self-corrected.
The people who ignored the science almost always got it wrong and never self-corrected.
@WicMar@GosiaGasperoPhD Meanwhile, yesterday the MCG in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia hosted the biggest crowd at a sporting event anywhere in the world since the pandemic began. This is an amazing achievement, considering Victoria had 100s of new COVID cases a day 9 months ago. https://t.co/4KRh8U6XX1
@yaneerbaryam We should be installing CO2 detectors in schools, restaurants, workplaces, and any other place we expect people to gather indoors. Readily available and relatively inexpensive as a way to evaluate adequacy of ventilation rates.
Israel didn’t achieve this by relying on vaccines alone. They spent 139 days in lockdown—the most in the world—required masks outdoors for a year, & adhered to strict public health guidelines. #ZeroCovid could happen here, but shortcuts won’t work.
I really need people to look at these numbers.
We know our neighbors to the north are struggling. We can see their tweets and they are outraged.
Now look at us. Look at our numbers.

1/With the 4,456 new official Covid-19 cases in Ontario today and the majority of Covid-19 cases in Canada now being VOCs, maybe it's a good time to update what we know about transmission. Thanks to @DFisman for editing and fact-checking and @realsarahpolley for the inspiration.
