@Paul____john If I remember rightly Zaraki challenged and killed the previous Kenpachi so he became the captain that way. Yoruichi... Partly because of her status as nobility and the reason on her mastery of Shunpo and Hakuda which she is more comfortable with than Zanpakto usage.
