There are some footballers for whom statistics and even words simply can’t do justice. Dennis Berkgamp was one of those players.
In order to enjoy football,we need artists. The footballing Da Vincis and Picassos so to speak. Players that mesmerise us.
“Why argue with an Arsenal fan when you can just wait?” We waited. We won. We are champions of England - and we are just one game away from being crowned champions of Europe. Read my piece on what Arsenal means to me here: https://t.co/J6cg388mRH
Unpopular opinion but Mikel Arteta is amongst the top 3 managers in the Premier League. I see him and Tuchel at a very similar level. Regardless the job Arteta has done at Arsenal is nothing short of incredible. Miracle Worker.
We all saw the game and I think we all can agree the better team lost today because of corrupt / horrible referee'ing. Nonetheless I'm so proud of the boy's in red. I hope today was enough to convince everyone that Arteta truly is building something special here.
Now that the high from the win is over, I wanna talk the boring part: Tactics.
That lineup wasn't bad... versus a team like Burnley. It is an imbalanced lineup and I'm sure y'all know why cos I've been yapping about it all season. Too. Many. Ball-to-feet. Players.
In possession, the most important thing is Player Dynamics. Basically the synergy between players and how they fit on the pitch. Think of it as puzzle pieces 🧩 or Legos; they gotta fit together otherwise the right shape isn't formed.
We cannot use this formation against mid-block teams (Crystal Palace) or stronger teams (PSG). The formation was fine now because Burnley play in a low-block (many ball-to-feet cam be beneficial here because spaces are tight vs low-blocks) and don't attack (Rice-Eze-Ø is not ideal to stop transitions). You saw what happened in the second half when Burnley got more adventurous.
There are two main problems with this formation:
1. There is no runner vs mid-block teams to stretch the defence. I'm a Havertz defender but he's a drop deep, ball-to-feet player. Noticed how we scored the second goal vs Fulham's mid-block (a team that has historically given us problems with their mid-block) and how we scored vs Atletico's mid-block? A Gyökeres run. He has the speed and stays high+central, which is ideal for beating mid-blocks. Starting Havertz isn't bad, but if you start him, you should start him with a runner (we have three in attack, Martinelli, Gyökeres, Madueke) if going against a mid-block team.
2. Big teams will eat us alive OOP. Eze is not a midfielder in Arteta's system. Misprofiling him as one and then getting upset he isn't doing what he physically just cannot do won't solve anything. He is a moments player, which is the opposite of what our all-encompassing midfield roles demand. Add him to Ødegaard, who is actually great at all phases but is physically not blessed enough to duel, and you can see why it puts a ton of burden on Rice. Eze is a LW in our system, it covers his weaknesses OOP and IP and enhanced his strengths. Any good team that knows this will attack us and we'd be cooked.
Our next two games must have MLSxRice as the double pivot and either TrossardxGyökeresxSaka EzexGyökerexSaka, OR MartinellixHavertzxSaka as our attacking trio.
Personally, I prefer TrossardxGyökeresxSaka because the stats overwhelmingly back this trio. We've won 13/14 games with this trio starting.
