Air fryer actually works.

The issue with the oven (and microwave, because this happens there too) is that there's no heat-sealing the outside. It slow-heats it and all the juices and fats and flavor seep out before the crisp ever even starts; all of the flavor gets left behind on your baking sheet and all that's left is dry, bland, thin sadness that just kinda looks like bacon. A hot pan/griddle or blasting high-heat convection crisp the outside first and hold all the goodness in.
