One week in and ... yah #TheFourOfUs is waddling and not striding.

The story is redundant with beautiful scenes. Its world is too familiar, and not in a good way.

The one thing that made this show appealing ahead of its premiere has become the albatross around its neck.

With big names, comes big expectations and sadly the producers made a huge mistake by casting their leads with a "give the people what they want" mentality.

Sindi Dlathu is a force and unfortunately in this show that force is dragging the show down. Lindiwe Dikana is looming large in her performance and it unfortunately casts a repetition cloud on the whole show. You can't escape The River 2.0 feel when watching this.

For someone who never watches the river, I assume the show lands differently. But, if you were immersed in the Madlabantu universe, this feels like another stab at dead horse. Beautiful as the execution might be!

On the positive side, the supporting characters seem to have a lot to offer outside of the main family drama circle. A lot can be done with those 'B story' roles.

Unfortunately for an audience that is used to telenovelas now and don't have the patience for character development and story universe expansion, the interest wanes quickly.

6 episodes in, from my side, I am still not invested in any of these characters. I enjoyed a few scenes. The acting is adequate enough, as expected. However, I am yet to be hooked. I have yet to care enough for any of the characters to invest in seeing their journey. That's a problem.

I hope Ms Dlathu has not cornered herself into an Israel Mokae-esque typecast trap. I hope she does a movie or something on the side to showcase her range because Busani is not doing her acting prowess any benefits beyond being a safe space.

There is a glimmer of hope ... still. Tshedza Pictures' reputation is impeccable and that gives one that hope. The show may surprise us beyond these early days.

Question remains; will the audience stick around long enough?
